Mission

We encourage students to investigate how writing, reading, literary study, and philosophical inquiry shape identity and our understanding of the human condition

Student Learning Outcomes

Core Outcomes  (apply to all English Graduates)

  1. Graduates will be able to interpret literature and language by canonical and marginalized authors from around the globe and across centuries.  
  2. Graduates will be able to create research projects. 
  3. Graduates will be able to distinguish the concepts of modern critical and theoretical movements.  
  4. Graduates will be able to apply communication skills in public and professional settings.  
  5. Graduates will be able to apply active reading skills.  

Literary Studies

  • Graduates will be able to analyze how various literary works contribute to and challenge prevailing ideologies, values, and perspectives.  

English Language Arts 6-12

  • Graduates will be able to create standards-based lessons that integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening for diverse learners.

Creative Writing

  • Graduates will be able to create original works of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry.

Humanities and Diversity

  • Graduates will be able to evaluate the foundations of their own beliefs and the beliefs of others.  
  • Graduates will be able to compare diverse contemporary and historical interdisciplinary perspectives.
