Military Science Leadership – ROTC Program

Mission

The Chadron State College Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) War Eagle Company was established in 2005 and is affiliated with the Mount Rushmore Battalion, located on the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology campus. The CSC ROTC program, administered by commissioned and non-commissioned officers of the United States Army, is open to both men and women. Courses are offered on the CSC campus, along with field exercises and social events at Camp Rapid in Rapid City, South Dakota. Military Science Leadership courses (MSL) complement any course of study providing leadership training unavailable anywhere else on campus. Participation in the ROTC Basic Course incurs no military obligation. Students completing both the Basic Course and Advanced Course may be commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army or the Nebraska National Guard.

Curriculum

Military science is an academic elective program, not an academic major. The overall curricula is designed and standardized by a national review process controlled by U.S. Army Cadet Command.

Four-year program

The Army ROTC four-year program consists of two parts: Basic Course and Advanced Course.

  • Basic Course: One basic level military science course (MSL 101, MSL 102, MSL 201 and MSL 202) is taken each semester in conjunction with one lab session per week during the freshman and sophomore years. Students may participate in the Army ROTC basic level courses without incurring any military obligation.
  • Advanced Course: One advanced level military science course (MSL 301, MSL 302, MSL 401, MSL 402) is taken each semester along with one lab session per week during the junior and senior years. Military science advanced courses may only be taken by students who are contracting to earn a commission and have completed Basic Course (or equivalency).

Two-year program

The Army ROTC two-year program accommodates upper-class students already enrolled at or transferring to the Chadron State College who have not taken the Basic Course. To participate in this program, the student shall have successfully completed Basic Camp (BC), Army Basic Combat Training, or alternate approved training during the summer before entering the Advanced Course.
